DMV: Driver in California Bus Crash Lacked Bus License
The Colusa, California bus carrying 42 passengers on a gambling trip, the majority Laotian seniors, crashed and killed eight of the travelers and injured 30 others. Passengers who survived the crash said that the bus driver appeared to have dozed off. Passengers tried to warn the driver but the vehicle rolled off the road and landed in a drainage ditch. The driver was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.

The bus was driven by a man holding a license to drive no more than 10 passengers. Motor vehicle records showed the driver had been cited for speeding and other violations that resulted in loss of his license for nearly two years. He regained his driving privileges last January.

Qualified drivers are the responsibility of the bus owner. Unfortunately, the owner was killed in the accident. It was unknown why the owner was not driving that day and why an unlicensed driver was behind the wheel. Under penalty of perjury the owner had claimed he had no employees and was the sole driver, therefore he was not required to maintain workers' compensation insurance.
