DUI Arrests Increase in Orange County Over Labor Day Weekend

SEPTEMBER 2011, Orange County, California—According to the Orange County Sheriff's Department, this year’s statistics show a significant increase in DWI arrests as law enforcement agencies arrested more people on suspicion of driving while under the influence.

Deputy Wayne Howard of the sheriff department's traffic unit reported that authorities made 262 DUI arrests during the Friday through Monday Labor Day weekend. Last year, 187 DUI arrests were made during that same time period.

The Anti-DUI campaign was carried out by the multi-agency anti-DUI task force known as "Avoid the 38," which includes the Sheriff's Department, local police departments, and the California Highway Patrol. Howard said the rise in DUI arrests is likely due to “more aggressive enforcement.” Funding for this enforcement program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety.
